Massachusetts continues to shine in the national spotlight for academic excellence. According to the latest U.S. News & World Report 2025 rankings of the nation’s best high schools, the Bay State once again boasts several schools recognized for their superior academic performance and student outcomes. Leading the way are Boston Latin School, Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School, and Lexington High School, which earned the top three spots statewide.
Boston Latin School Takes #1
Located at 78 Avenue Louis Pasteur in Boston, the historic Boston Latin School ranked as Massachusetts’ No. 1 high school and among the top schools in the nation. Founded in 1635, Boston Latin is the oldest public school in America and continues to uphold a legacy of rigorous academics and civic leadership.
The school’s strong emphasis on classical education, advanced placement (AP) participation, and college readiness helped it secure its leading position. U.S. News recognized Boston Latin for its high graduation rates and exceptional performance on state assessments, with students frequently outperforming both state and national averages.
“Boston Latin’s tradition of excellence is built on centuries of commitment to intellectual rigor, equity, and opportunity,” said a Boston Public Schools spokesperson. “We’re proud to see that history reflected in this year’s ranking.”
#2 Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School
Coming in at #2 statewide, the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School (PVCICS) at 317 Russell Street in Hadley continues to be one of the most unique academic institutions in the country.
Founded in 2007, PVCICS offers an innovative bilingual education model that immerses students in both English and Mandarin Chinese while maintaining strong performance in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The school serves grades K–12 and prepares graduates for a globalized workforce.
U.S. News highlighted the school’s commitment to multicultural education and its consistently high test scores, noting that its graduates are not only linguistically skilled but also well-prepared for top-tier universities.
#3 Lexington High School
Rounding out the top three is Lexington High School, located at 251 Waltham Street in Lexington. The school has long been known for its strong academic programs, high college matriculation rates, and a wide variety of extracurricular activities that foster student growth beyond the classroom.
Lexington’s students excel in Advanced Placement testing and standardized assessments, and the district’s strong community support and investment in education continue to make it one of the most sought-after public schools in the state.
Massachusetts Schools Among the Nation’s Best
Massachusetts has consistently led the nation in educational achievement, with public schools that emphasize both academic rigor and holistic development. The state’s top-ranked schools reflect a broader commitment to excellence—offering world-class learning environments that prepare students for success in college and beyond.
The 2025 U.S. News & World Report high school rankings evaluated nearly 25,000 public schools across the United States based on criteria such as college readiness, math and reading proficiency, graduation rates, and performance of underserved students.
A Continued Legacy of Excellence
With three schools in different regions of the Commonwealth—Boston, Hadley, and Lexington—earning top honors, Massachusetts demonstrates that high-quality education thrives across both urban and suburban communities.
As the state continues to invest in its public education system, these rankings reaffirm Massachusetts’ reputation as a national leader in academic performance and innovation.
